"Acer Cancels Alibaba-Powered Smartphone Launch"

Acer CloudMobile A800

Acer was supposed to launch a version of the CloudMobile smartphone that runs on Aliyun OS, an Android-based operating system developed by Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group. However, the two organizations have announced that the launch of their Acer CloudMobile A800 (pictured) was canceled.

Journalists in Shanghai who were supposed to cover the event Thursday were not allowed to enter the venue and an official from Alibaba’s subsidiary Alibaba Cloud Computing said the launch had been canceled because of “internal reasons.”
Alibaba, which already released its own Aliyun-powered smartphone last year, released a statement later on that Taiwan-based electronics company Acer gave in to pressure from Google Inc and pulled out of the launch event.
“Our partner received notification from Google that if the new product launch with Aliyun went ahead, Google would terminate Android product cooperation and related technical authorization with Acer,” the statement read.
Both spokespersons from Acer and Google declined to comment.
