Google’s ruthless collection of user data, whether it is from search
and browsing histories WiFi information from its Street View cameras,
has gotten people worried. Russia is among those worrywarts and has
produced its own take on the Android operating system, but without
Google’s data collection.
The OS, named Russian Mobile Operating System (RoMOS), was introduced
at the IFA event in Berlin. It works with Russia’s Global Navigation
Satellite System and reportedly mimics the Android both visually and
performance-wise
The first RoMOS-powered hardware–a tablet–is set to debut by the end
of the year, although the RoMOS’ project manager claimed the software
may also be used for smartphones as well. The RoMOS tablet will mainly
cater to the country’s military, which always has concerns about
Google-collected data from its devices falling into the hands of United
States government. The gadget will not only be waterproof, but also
shockproof.
There will also be a consumer version of the RoMOS tablet, but do not
expect it to come with the same specs as its military counterpart.
