BlackBerry 10, the operating system Research In Motion
has teased for way too long, has finally been revealed to the
developers and press. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins assured that BB10 “will do
everything current OS’s do, just better.”
Developers were provided with a new BB10-powered handset called “Dev
Alpha B,” where they could test their apps in. The Dev Alpha B is quite
thick and could be a precursor to an upcoming L-Series smartphone.
BB 10 centers on the BlackBerry Hub, a one-stop venue to access business email,
Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger, and text messages among
others. The new OS is also updated with a spanking new interface RIM
calls “BlackBerry Flow,” assuring the users seamless continuity in
usage. For instance, the user simply moves their finger around the
screen to unlock the device.
Another enticing feature is the BlackBerry Peek, wherein users can
check their hub screen from any app without exiting the program. The
Peek only requires a finger swipe to see what text messages, emails, and
other notifications are waiting on the phone.
Heins also said BB 10 smartphones will come with the same HDMI and
USB connectors seen in previous BlackBerry devices. “We all can save
some money,” Hein said in what could be a jab to iPhone 5’s new 8-pin
connector called Lightning, which is sold separately and would prompt
Apple users to purchase a separate set of adapters.
The BlackBerry 10, along with new phones that run on it, are set to be released next year.
