OUYA Game Console |
It is just never easy to keep a good idea down. When it’s a great
idea, people tend to get interested. If it’s a very great idea, people
may even be willing to spend money just to help get that very great idea
exist for people to touch, see and experience. This is probably what
happened to the OUYA Game Console project at Kickstarter, which just
ended a successful funding run that reached an incredible 8.5 million in
just a month.
Yes, it seems that Kickstarter has become the source of venture funds
for companies with very great ideas. And OUYA is one of them. The
project involves the development of an open platform gaming console
designed for those neglected TV’s at home.
With smartphones and tablets becoming the hottest gadgets around, it
has led many of the best game developers to create and design apps for
them. It has left the game console market suffer considerably, partly
due to the closed system that most of the popular gaming consoles still
employ. This is about to change with the arrival of OUYA.
OUYA will be designed as an open platform gaming console developed
using Android. Since it is an open platform, developers will be free to
develop games for the device, much like game apps for the portable
devices of today. But this time, the new games are playable on the TV,
with the benefit of having a larger screen to play them. The only
provision is that developers are required to provide a free game version
of the games developed on the OUYA.
The OUYA is designed to be affordable and open that developers can
even modify the device as much as they wish. The controllers are
designed to offer the best possible experience during gameplay. It is in
no way just a so-so device since the console will feature a Tegra3 Quad
core Processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, HDMI connector, WiFi and
Bluetooth support as well as wireless controllers. Partnerships with
other companies will ensure that the new open platform gaming console
will have other features than just being limited to games. Truly an
exciting device borne out of a great idea, the OUYA
is expected to be available to the early Kickstarter backers in March.
The lucky first backers may get the OUYA console and controller with
their US$95 contribution. The device may probably cost more than than
when it eventually becomes available on retail.
