The new Windows 8
OS, along with its array of supported devices, will finally become
available for purchase starting 12:01 a.m. on Friday, presumably in all
time zones. Compatible devices range from desktops, laptops, tablets,
and even laptop-tablet hybrids, not to mention Microsoft’s very own Surface tablet.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer touted the touch-based navigation of
Windows 8, saying that consumers can harness that feature on tablets, as
well as touch-based laptops, hybrids, and all-in-one PCs. He also
added that Microsoft has “truly re-imagined Windows and kicked off a new
era.”
The CEO then introduced the apps and services available through Windows 8, such as Internet Explorer 10, SkyDrive, Bing, Skype, Outlook, and Xbox Music
and Video. He also shows off how the new OS makes use of cloud
storage, which he defined as “the ability to connect your computers to
your “stuff” as something “magical.”
Ballmer boldly predicts that 400 million new PCs will be sold, most
of which will run on Windows 8, as well as 670 million potential Windows
8 upgrades that cost $40 each. How the people react to the new OS is everyone’s guess.
