It has been confirmed that Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, is meeting with regional carrier MetroPCS on a possible acquisition deal.
According to AllThingsD, “significant issues have not yet been
finalized, contracts have not yet been signed and the conclusion of the
transaction is still not certain.” If the buyout suffices, the German
wireless carrier plans to utilize MetroPCS’ resources to boost up
T-Mobile’s coverage.
Details on how much Deutsche Telekom will pay for MetroPCS in case of
an acquisition remains scant, but shares of MetroPCS rise by as much as
23% when news broke out, giving the company a market value of around $5
billion.
T-Mobile is currently the fourth largest wireless carrier in the US
after AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, with an estimated 33 million
subscribers. Meanwhile, MetroPCS has around 9.3 million prepaid
customers.
