Nintendo TVii |
Nintendo has revealed that not only does the Wii U
play video games using a tablet-ish GamePad controller, but also comes
with TV functionality. Introduced during its New York City press event,
the “Nintendo TVii” enables users to search for and watch their
favorite TV series across an array of content providers including
Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, and even cable television.
Zach Fountain, Nintendo’s director of strategic partnership, calls
the service a “personalized program guide.” He demonstrates how users
would be able to interact with content: television shows and movies can
be search by text entry or through categories. If you are not a fan of
typing your queries, a rotary entry located in the lower right corner
of the screen offers an alternative method of navigation.
For now, the Nintendo TVii service is only available for Wii U owners
in United States and Canada, although the company is considering
expanding the service into other parts of the Americas. The service
comes free with the purchase of the Wii U this November.
