Foxconn Plant in China Shuts Down Amid Riots

One of the factories of Foxconn Technology in Taiyuan, China, is said to have been closed after a riot involving more than 1,000 factory employees occurred last weekend to the point the police were called to break it up.

Foxconn is one of Apple’s largest manufacturer of iPhones and iPads.

A spokeman for Foxconn said “some people” had been injured and detained by the police, adding that the incident was confined to a worker dormitory and “no production facilities or equipment have been affected.”

Both the company and the police are investigating to know the cause of the disturbance. In a telephone interview, an employee of Foxconn claimed the riot began when workers brawled with security guards.

Foxconn declined to specify whether the Taiyuan plant, which is said to employ about 79,000 workers, assembled Apple’s iPhone 5, which went on sale last week.
