Apple - Samsung |
The jury in a San Jose, California court has ruled that Samsung stole
designs from Apple in developing its smartphones and computer tablets.
As a result, the court has ordered the South Korean conglomerate to pay
Apple $1.05 billion in damages.
Predictably, Samsung was not pleased with the decision and plans to
file for an appeal, even accusing the Cupertino-based company of using
US patent laws in its attempt to dominate the smartphone market.
In a statement, Samsung said that it was “unfortunate that patent law
can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with
rounded corners”. Meanwhile, Apple applauded the decision, even
praising the court for “for finding Samsung’s behaviour wilful and for
sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right”.
The nine-person jury deliberated for less than three days before
coming up with a unanimous decision, rejecting all of Samsung’s claims
and upholding five of Apple’s claims.
The ruling comes after a court in South Korea ruled that both firms had copied each other’s patents, while a British court dismissed Apple’s claims that Samsung had infringed its patents.
Apple has also filed for an injunction to block Samsung products
deemed infringing in the United States at a follow-up hearing on
September 20th.
