Like-A-Hug Jacket |
This has got to be the saddest piece of clothing ever made.
The Like-A-Hug jacket is connected to the wearer’s Facebook account.
Whenever a Facebook friend “likes” a photo or status update you posted,
the jacket fills itself with air to mimic a “hugging” sensation.
To this I ask: Why the need for simulated hugs? Has our society
become so distant to each other that we need a jacket to remind us how
it feels to be hugged? Are we really that thirsty for attention that
seeing someone “like” what we posted is no longer enough?
“Like-A-Hug is a wearable social media vest that allows for hugs to
be given via Facebook, bringing us closer despite physical distance,”
co-creator Melissa Chow explained.
“The vest inflates when friends ‘Like’ a photo, video, or status
update on the wearer’s wall, thereby allowing us to feel the warmth
encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs.”
The wearer can “hug” that friend back by squeezing the Like-A-Hug and deflating it.
For obvious reasons, you cannot wear this “innovative” piece of
clothing any time: job interviews, closing a deal, first dates. In
fact, I don’t think it is convenient to wear anywhere. Try wearing it
while riding an airplane and it suddenly inflated. Your fellow
passengers think you are overreacting that the plane might crash, then
you have to explain to them that is not the case, that a friend of yours
simply liked the photo of your fat cat trying to fit into a shoe box.
