It was April 2011 when Dish Network
acquired the struggling video-rental company Blockbuster in an effort
to position the brand as a worthy competitor of Netflix. Eighteen
months have passed and the new owner has given up.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Dish Network founder and CEO Charlie
Ergen confirmed what has long been rumored: the company is abandoning
its current efforts in making Blockbuster into a Netflix rival. Ergen
added that his company no longer plans to use Blockbuster as a video
streaming or DVD-by-mail service in the United States.
“Worst case, we’ll take our money after having wasted some time, not
much money, and life goes on,” Ergan said in seeming resignation.
On that note, Ergan said that Dish Network has other plans for Blockbuster, but did not elaborate on what those may be.
